Working out what it is that triggers an inappropriate behaviour is a major step in helping your dog. The way we manipulate or set-up their environment can reduce (or even stop) unwanted behaviours. This helps to break habits and gives us the chance to implement other training techniques that teach them better alternatives – modifying their behaviour for the better in the long-term.

It’s advisable to work on this with the whole family as some members may be more aware of certain triggers than others.

Reflecting in this way:

  • Identifies things that have been maintaining the behaviour.
  • Helps to formulate a plan in advance so that you have better control over any given situation.
  • Prevents the formation of bad habits.
  • Will help keep a dog calmer and prevent trigger stacking.
  • Improves the handler’s and the dog’s confidence.
