Working out what it is that triggers an inappropriate behaviour is a major step in helping your cat. The way we manipulate or set-up their environment can reduce (or even stop) unwanted behaviours. This helps to break habits and gives us the chance to implement other techniques that can modify their behaviour for the better in the long-term.

It’s advisable to work on this with the whole family as some members may be more aware of certain triggers than others.

Reflecting in this way:

  • Identifies things that have been maintaining the behaviour.
  • Helps to formulate a plan in advance so that you have better control over any given situation.
  • Prevents the formation of bad habits.
  • Will help keep a cat calmer and prevents trigger stacking (i.e. the accumulation of stress).
